The album's most successful single was the euphoric 'Gold Digger,' and although Jamie Foxx's straight-from-the-movie-theater Ray Charles imitation is decidedly not great, the song remains reliable dance-floor fodder, as long as revelers take a moment to reflect on whether it's appropriate for them to sing along to the chorus. Even the skits aren't terrible, at least in the universe of terrible filler skits. It meanders over six full minutes, taking its sweet time to build to the finale with a vocals-free bridge that lasts for so dang long that you might be tempted to hit the SKIP button if you didn't know better. When Kanye finishes it by literally announcing his departure to the listener—'Sorry, Mr. West is gone!'—it's a legitimate bummer.
Each of his subsequent albums deserves praise for different reasons—the concise Graduation is a collection of pitch-perfect pop-rap, and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is, from start to finish, still perhaps the most astonishingly cohesive album I've ever heard. Even the extremely-weird-at-the-time 808s and Heartbreaks ended up inspiring an entire generation of hip-hop artists to embrace their young adult moodiness instead of glossing over it. But Late Registration was the last glimpse of unvarnished Kanye, when he seemed like a regular dude fumbling awkwardly—but trying mightily—to work out his thoughts and feelings and emotions in his head, just like everyone else. It's great that he's moved on to other artistic endeavors, obviously. I'm just glad he made this record first.
